Liberia: Pro-Temp Accuses Urey

Senate Pro-tempore Gbehnzohngar Milton Findley, has pointed accusing fingers at presidential hopeful Benoni Urey of masterminding protest at the Capitol against a planned sale of oil blocks 4, 6, 16, and 17, respectively.

Pro-tempore Findley claimed that Tuesday’s protest by young people on the grounds of the Capitol Building was orchestrated by Mr. Urey, once a stalwart of the ex-ruling National Patriotic Party. Group of youths Tuesday morning stormed the grounds of the Capitol, led by a radio talk show host, Henry Costa of the Voice FM, accusing the lawmakers of receiving about US$ 2 million to sell the country’s remaining oil blocks.

They have petitioned the lawmakers to halt further oil deals. The petition was received by the House of Representatives, Chairman on Petition, Representative Gabriel Nyenka of Montserrado County. Rep. Nyenka promised to forward the petition to plenary of the House of Representatives for proper redress.

Speaking at a news conference at the Capitol Tuesday, Senator Findely, who is seeking re-election in Grand Bassa, maintained that the channel through which Mr. Urey was proffering his views is counterproductive to Liberia’s young democracy. He said Liberian politicians should learn to channel their views in a proper manner or it could create unnecessary tension in the country and undermine peace.

But responding to the claim coming from the Pro-tempore, the “Friends of Urey” – a pro-Urey group chaired by Mr. Emmanuel Lomax, said it is regrettable to note that in the face of numerous national challenges as a consequence of his lack of leadership in the Liberian Senate, Findley would choose to be political, reckless and irresponsible in his utterances against Mr. Urey.

“The Friends of Urey wish to state clearly that while Mr. Urey did not, and will never orchestrate or plan any chaos or insurrection against the nation, he, however, supports the constitutional and fundamental rights of Liberians to assemble in a peaceful and orderly manner to address their grievances”, read a statement signed by Lomax.

The statement said that Mr. Urey commends both the Government of Liberia and those who assembled Tuesday at the Capitol Building for the manner in which both parties conducted themselves.
