Abuja — The Niger Delta Power Holdings (NDPHC) Plc, which is handling the 10 National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) plants, on Thursday said that vandals attacked and cut its transmission lines and tower worth N40 million in Abia state.
NDPHC also stated that the development has ensured that 1,397 megawatts (MW) of electricity which should have come from three of its plants through the line will be stranded.
The Executive Director, Legal and Company Secretary of NDPHC, Mr Abdullahi Salisu, told reporters in Abuja that the company still contends with such developments and many court restraints in the state and its environs.
Salisu said that the 132/330KV transmission tower worth N40 million was hacked in Ikwuano town even after the community was duly compensated after the NDPHC obtained a Right of Way (RoW) for the over 200 kilometres line to Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom.
He said people were mobilised to hack down the tower weighing about 30 tonnes with a generator and steel chain-saw for what he described as perceived inadequate compensation and alleged threat to health.
Salisu lamented that such were some of the causes of the delay in completing the North-South transmission loop connecting the 563MW Calabar plant, 330MW Egbema plant in Imo, and 504MW Alaoji plant in Abia state.
