Tubing Torque for Short-Thread Chart

Oilfield Chart - Tubing Torque for Short-Thread Chart

Casing and Tubing

Casing refers to the outer covering to isolate the tube from the surrounding environment and protect the aquifers and groundwater from being contaminated by oil and gas.

The casing must withstand forces such as tensile failure, brines, collapse, and burst.  The tubing pertains to the pipe that comes from the ground surface and is inserted into the casing. The outer diameter of 4 ½ inches is a threshold for a tubing or casing. Anything smaller than the outer diameter is tubing, anything larger is casing.

Tubing Torque for Short-Thread Chart

A Tubing Torque for Short-Thread Chart is a guide for specifying the needed casing, the outer diameter or OD (measured in inches), and the nominal weight (lb./ft), a grade that gives the casing steel its distinct properties, hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength.

The Short-Thread Chart for Tubing Torque determines the torque strength (measured in ft-lb) whether it’s minimum, maximum, and optimum.

Casing Grades

Common Application Casings (J55, H40, M65, N80, K55, R95)

The Short-Thread Chart of Tubing Torque tells various casing grades. The casing grade involves various names recommended by the American Petroleum Institute (API) such as the common application casings (J55, H40, M65, N80, K55, R95). Casing pipes of Grades J55, N80 and K55 are common because of their lower prices compared to other steel grades and compatibility with wells that do not need stringent strength and anti-corrosion requirements.

R95 and M65 are newer grades and differ in tensile and yield strengths.

Some examples:

  • K55 – K55 features similar yield as the J55 and has a minimum strength that is 26% higher compared to J55.  The API color code is 2 bright green bands and yield strength is 379-552 MPa or 55-80 ksi.
  • M65 – M65, among the general-purpose casing, is the only steel grade with a restricted maximum harness. Its yield strength is 448-586 MPa, minimum tensile strength is 586, and API color code is 1 blue band + 1 bright green band.

Deep Well Casing (Q125, P110)

P110 and Q125 are suited for deep wells with high-pressure formations except for H2S environments that can make steel more susceptible to sulfide stress cracking.

Corrosion-Resistant Casing (C90, L80, T95, C110)

L80-13Cr and L80-9Cr, which are high in chromium content, are suited for use in C02 environment. C110, T95, and C90 are resistant in H2S environment because of lower phosphorus and sulfur limits.

The Short Threading (STC)

STC can hold more tensile strength but are poor in sealing performance compared to long thread casing or LTC.
