Liberia: Speaker Tyler – ‘New Oil, Gas Laws to Reflect Good of Society’

The Speaker of the House of Representatives has reemphasized the need to ensure that the New Oil and Gas Laws will reflect the good of society and strengthen the overall growth and development of the country.

Speaker Alex Tyler said the validation phase on the New Oil and Gas Laws is a key component in reforming the sector and see the process as a turning point aimed at fostering participatory governance in Liberia.

Hon. Tyler made these assertions Friday, December 5, 2014 at the formal opening of A Two -Day National Stakeholders Dialogue for the validation of the Draft Petroleum Exploration and Production Act Of 2013 taking place at the Monrovia City Hill.

The exercise is part of an effort by the National Legislature to adopt a new petroleum Law that will govern the Oil and Gas sector of Liberia. It is in furtherance of the reform process initiated by the Government of Liberia in 2012 to ensure that the country’s emerging oil and appropriate laws and policies that will enhance the country’s chances of achieving optimal benefits from its assets govern gas sector.

Also speaking at the official opening, The Vice President for Public Affairs, Mr. Lamini Waritay lauded the efforts of the Legislature to scrupulously examine the New Oil and Gas Laws especially engaging the inputs of Liberians across the country.

This is the third and final phase of the Legislature to reform the Petroleum Laws of Liberia.

The two days conference brings together twenty-five participants from the Civil Society, Vidal tate-hage and petroleum lawyers that include Mr. Marcus Zarway of the GIZ, Regional Resource Governance Program, Mr. Thomas Doe Nah of CENTAL, Mr. Harold Aidoo of the Institute for Research and demoncratic Development, Mr. Jimmy Shilue of the Natural Resource Management Consortium, Madam Anyah Vohiri, Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency amongst others.

It can be recalled In November 2013, Members of the House of Representatives toured the leeward counties to publicly engage citizens and solicit their inputs in the draft law.
