Nigeria: Safest Ways of Conveying Petroleum Products, By NUPENG

Lagos — The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has stated that the safest ways of conveying petroleum products in Nigeria are through railways, which must be rehabilitated and modernised; and also by training and retraining of tanker drivers on safe driving.

The union also promised to continue to train and re-orient tanker drivers on safe driving to reduce accidents on the roads.

  • It also asked the Federal Government to rehabilitate railways for petroleum haulage.

The union stated these through its President, Mr. Igwe Achese, in Lagos.

The union explained that the training would be frequent, following recent fuel tanker accidents in Onitsha, Anambra State; and Lagos, Lagos State.

It would be recalled that fuel tanker fire on June 1, 2015, in Onitsha, claimed over 50 lives and property while that of Lagos on June 2, 2015, claimed property worth N2 million.

The union also urged the governors of the two states affected in the recent tanker accidents to assist the families of those who lost their loved ones and property.

It prayed for those who lost their property, shops and cars and other valuable property as a result of the inferno.
