The Gautrain service between Midrand and Hatfield on Monday evening was experiencing delays due to a short in one of the two lines, a spokesperson for the high-speed link said.
“There was a foreign object which fell onto the catenary (overhead line) which caused a short and actually cut the electricity off,” Ian Findlay told News24.
“One line is operating okay… There will be delays but we are hoping people will get to their final destination.”
At around 20:00, Gautrain tweeted on its official Twitter account that partial power had been restored and trains were operating via a single track.
“We anticipate delays of 30 minutes at present,” it tweeted.
Technicians were working to restore power to the disrupted lines.
