ZIMBABWE will experience more power outages in the next three weeks due to low energy supplies and maintenance work being carried out at Kariba South power station, the power utility said on Thursday.
Maintenance works at Kariba South’s generator number five has resulted in power supply being reduced by 125MW, the energy company said.
Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a power deficit with daily electricity of demand of 2,200 MW against an installed capacity of 1,100MW and government has encouraged independent private producers (IPPs) to step in to cover the deficit.
“The power supply situation is expected to remain subdued for the next three weeks, after which there will be an improvement as maintenance works will have been completed,” said Zesa Holdings in a statement.
Zesa said Hydro Cahora Bassa, the utility’s primary source of imported energy has been supplying 50MW over the past months from the normal 400MW due to increased load from coal mines in the Tete Province of Mozambique.
